HC Deb 20 July 1988 vol 137 cc653-4W
Mr. Shersby

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) whether the brand of powdered baby milk which was withdrawn from the market as a result of salmonella infection has now been returned to supermarket shelves; and if he will make a statement;

(2) which powdered baby foods were withdrawn from the market earlier this month; where they were manufactured; and what was the source of contamination.

Mrs. Currie

On 1 July 1988 Milupa UK recalled two dried baby milks, Milumil and aptamil, and three infant breakfast cereals, '7 cereal', 'oat breakfast with apple', and `mixed fruit with cereal' all produced at their factory in Colmar, France, following a finding of salmonella in one sample of Milumil produced in January 1988. The source of the infection is still not known despite extensive investigations by the company and the French authorities. Intensive cleaning was carried out by the company at the beginning of May 1988, and it has been agreed that withdrawn products may be replaced by those manufactured after this date. Products made in the Milupa factory in West Germany are not affected, and have remained on retail sale.
