HC Deb 20 July 1988 vol 137 cc657-8W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if, in the light of the omission of references to postgraduate teaching hospitals from the cardinal principles set out by Bloomsbury health authority which it will not breach without further reference to the authority in respect of savings measures, he will instruct the authority to adopt the principle that the role of the postgraduate hospitals and institutes should not be fundamentally undermined and that they should continue to be able to sustain postgraduate teaching and research.

Mr. Newton

I understand that Bloomsbury health authority intends that the teaching and research role of the postgraduate hospitals should be preserved.

Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will set up an inquiry into the decline or development that has occurred with the postgraduate hospitals, with particular regard to the financial effect on the hospital of being independent as against being within a district health authority.

Mr. Newton

We have no plans to do so.

Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his policy towards the continued incorporation of postgraduate hospitals in health authorities with severe financial problems.

Mr. Newton

We have no plans to change the existing arrangements under which hospitals with postgraduate teaching facilities are managed by particular health authorities.
