To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is Her Majesty's Government's policy towards increasing the permitted level of nitrates in water from 50 mg/litre to 100 mg/litre.

Mr. Moynihan

The Government's policy is to comply with the standard of 50 mg of nitrate per litre of drinking water set in the European Commission directive relating to the quality of water intended for human consumption (80/778/EEC).
