§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe Department prescribes standards and procedures for the maintenance of trunk roads, and determines priorities and funding. It entrusts its agents (principally local highway authorities) with the tasks of administering its requirements for monitoring road condition, identifying needs, letting contracts and supervising contractors. A technical audit system is being introduced to monitor routine maintenance work and improve efficiency.
