HC Deb 20 July 1988 vol 137 c595W
Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Prime Minister what are her proposals for preserving or extending the level of electoral registration.

The Prime Minister

The Government will continue the current efforts, including the annual publicity campaign, to encourage those entitled to do so to register for the vote. Research sponsored by the Home Office has identified a number of ways in which the level of registration could be improved; some of these have been put into effect and others are under active consideration. In particular, electoral registration officers are being encouraged to make more widespread use of personal, door-to-door canvassing.

We intend to introduce, in this Parliament, legislation to fulfill our commitment to enable more British citizens living abroad to register for the vote.
