HC Deb 20 July 1988 vol 137 c656W
Sir John Farr

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to improve the supply of National Health Service factor VIII needed for the treatment of haemophiliacs.

Mrs. Currie

Factor VIII for the treatment of haemophilia patients in England and Wales is made for the National Health Service by the blood products laboratory (BPL) at Elstree. A new BPL costing £60 million was opened in April 1987. After an extensive commissioning programme BPL is issuing factor VIII at record levels, and production is planned to rise steadily to meet the needs of haemophiliacs.
