HC Deb 19 July 1988 vol 137 cc545-6W
Mr. David Porter

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the future role of the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences and other institutes controlled by the Natural Environment Research Council involved in wave research.

Mr. Jackson

The two Natural Environment Research Council institutes involved in wave research are the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences Deacon laboratory and the Proudman oceanographic laboratory. Both will continue to play a strategic role in maintaining Britain's place among world leaders in marine science. Science budget funded wave research at these laboratories will form part of the core research projects listed in the NERC strategy for marine sciences published last December. In addition they will continue wave research commissioned by Government Departments and other customers.
