Mr. Allen

34. Mr. Baldry

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the initiatives being taken to train new parent governors in schools.

36. Sir John Farr

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the availability of qualified school governors needed under the Education Reform Bill.

Mr. Dunn

My right hon. Friend recently announced that he proposed to follow up the pilot project funded through education support grants (ESGs) in 10 local education authorities with support for nearly £5 million of expenditure on school governor training through the ESG mechanism in 1989–90; the intention is that all local education authorities should be able to seek support in carrying out this task. The Department is giving a grant to the National Association of Governors and Managers; it is supporting initiatives to provide information and new training materials relating to school management generally and to our proposals for financial delegation; and it is publicising the enhanced role which school governing bodies will have.
