To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will take steps to prevent the importing of polychlorinated biphenyl's into the United Kingdom.

Mr. Moynihan

Waste substances containing polychlorinated biphenysl are imported into the United Kingdom for safe disposal by specialist high-temperature incineration. Such trade is in the best interests of environmental protection. Polychlorinated biphenyls cannot be sold in the United Kingdom.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will introduce legislation to prevent the production of polychlorinated biphenyls in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Moynihan

Polychlorinated biphenyls are not manufactured anywhere in the United Kingdom. The Control of Pollution (Supply and Use of Injurious Substances) Regulations 1986 prohibit their sale.
