24. Mr. Sedgemore

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is now in a position to publish figures of the number and type of teachers required to deliver the national curriculum; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Members for Wakefield (Mr. Hinchliffe) and for Barnsley, East (Mr. Patchett) on 21 June at column523

35. Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement on the progress of the working parties established in relation to the national curriculum.

Mrs. Rumbold

My right hon. Friend has received the final reports of the national curriculum science and mathematics working groups. He is considering them and will be letting the National Curriculum Council have his comments, along with the reports, as a basis for consultations. My right hon. Friend appointed working groups for English and for design and technology in April this year. The English working group has been asked to submit advice on attainment targets and programmes of study for the primary phase by 30 September 1988; and a final report covering all stages to age 16 by 30 April 1989. The design and technology group has been asked to submit interim advice by 31 October 1988 and a final report by April 30 1989. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales has appointed a national curriculum Welsh working group which has been asked to submit interim advice by 30 September 1988 and a final report by 30 April 1989.

37. Mr. Fallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what further representations he has received on the content of the national curriculum.

Mrs. Rumbold

I refer my hon. Friend to my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Harrow, East (Mr. Dykes) on 21 June at column524

My right hon. Friend has recently received the reports of the maths and science working groups. He will shortly make proposals concerning attainment targets and programmes of study to the National Curriculum Council, which will consult widely before offering its advice.
