HL Deb 19 July 1988 vol 499 c1297WA
Lord Newall

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will make a statement about representations by Members of Parliament and Peers in immigration cases.

Earl Ferrers

My right honourable friend the Home Secretary announced on 16th November that he was to undertake a review of representations made by Members of Parliament and Peers in immigration cases. That review has now been completed and my right honourable friend yesterday placed a copy of the revised draft guidelines for handling these representations in the Library. Separate but similar draft guidelines were also issued yesterday by my right honourable and learned friend the Foreign Secretary in connection with representations about the operation of the immigration control overseas.

The revised draft guidelines continue to provide specific advice for Peers wishing to make representations in individual cases and in particular remind them that they should first consult the constituency Member in another place.
