HC Deb 19 July 1988 vol 137 c526W
Q90. Dr. Godman

To ask the Prime Minister if she will make it the policy of Her Majesty's Government to ensure that the introduction of the single European market will not affect the structure of the common fisheries policy, with particular reference to access agreements and the total allowable catch system; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The common fisheries policy was agreed in 1983. It lasts at least 20 years with a mid-term review. The Government are wholly committed to the structure of the CFP which represents a very fair deal for the United Kingdom. However we recognise that the single European Market may require adjustments such as harmonising fish hygiene regulations to facilitate trade but these will not affect the basic agreement including arrangements for access and total allowable catches.
