To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what action he is taking to raise he profile of careers teaching.

The Government attach high importance to good quality careers education and guidance. Under the joint DES—Department of Employment—Welsh Office initiative launched in April 1987, local education authorities are reviewing their policies and practice against the picture of desirable practice set out in the initiative booklet "Working Together for a Better Future". In parallel to this exercise, the Government are providing support to the in-service training of careers teachers as a national priority area under the local education authority training grants scheme.
