HC Deb 19 July 1988 vol 137 c515W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will meet the chairman of British Rail to discuss future investment proposals to reduce overcrowding on InterCity services.

Mr. David Mitchell

No. InterCity investment is a commercial matter for British Rail. I am always happy to approve any investment with a sound financial return.

Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will meet the chairman of British Rail to discuss future investment proposals for services between Cardiff and Crewe with regard to reducing overcrowding; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

I have no plans to do so; this is essentially a management matter for British Rail. I have, however, asked the chairman to bring forward proposals for loading standards for the provincial sector, and I look forward to receiving these as soon as possible.
