HC Deb 19 July 1988 vol 137 c543W
45. Ms. Armstrong

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proposals there are to develop examinations at 18-plus, in the light of the changes in examinations at 16-plus.

Mrs. Rumbold

The GCE examination boards have made the adjustments which they consider necessary to GCE advanced-level syllabuses to enable pupils to proceed to A-levels from GCSE without difficulty.

The Government have broadly welcomed the principles for A-level syllabuses and their assessment set out in chapter 2 of the report of the committee on A-levels, and look to the Secondary Examinations Council, and its proposed successor body, the School Examinations and Assessment Council, to reflect these principles in their day-to-day work of approving and scrutinising A-level syllabuses.
