HC Deb 18 July 1988 vol 137 c461W
Ms. Walley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to prohibit the addition of unnecessary substances to food and the use of unnecessary processes.

Mr. Donald Thompson

Independent expert advisory committees provide advice to Ministers on the use of substances throughout the food chain. The Food Act 1984 makes an offence the addition of any substances to food or the use of any process on food which will render the food injurious to health. Furthermore, in the exercise of regulation-making powers on the composition of food, Ministers are required by the Act to restrict as far as practicable the use of substances of no nutritional value.
