To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what his Department's latest assessment is of the average time spent on remand in custody by people awaiting trial.

Information on the average time spent on remand in prison department establishments is published annually in "Prison Statistics, England and Wales", at table 2(a) of the latest issue, for 1986, Cm. 210, copies of which are in the Library. The initial indications from provisional data reported in Home Office statistical bulletin 8/88, "The Prison Population in 1987", are that there was very little change in 1987.
