§ Sir George YoungTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will make a statement on London Residuary Body appointments.
§ Mr. ChopeThe following have been reappointed to the London Residuary Body for the period 12 August 1988 to 31 December 1990 or until the residuary body has discharged its responsibilities arising from abolition of the Greater London council, whichever is sooner:
395WMembers:
- A. Blakemore, CBE
- Councillor Sir Peter Bowness,CBE
- J. Esling
- W. J. Mackenzie, OBE
- M. C. Roberts
- J. Wolkind, CBE
These reappointments reflect my right hon. Friend's satisfaction with the great progress made so far by the London Residuary Body and his confidence in its ability to maintain the momentum towards completion of the work arising from abolition of the GLC. The financial benefits resulting from the removal of an expensive and unnecessary tier of London government are now being realised. Only two years on from abolition successor boroughs have already received from the London Residuary Body £129 million in revenue balances that can be directly applied to reduce the rates. By the end of this financial year they can expect to have received some £238 million in capital receipts that can be used to reduce borrowing and enhance capital programmes. These are impressive achievements, on which I congratulate the chairman, Sir Godfrey Taylor, and the members of his board.
