HC Deb 15 July 1988 vol 137 cc402-3W
Mr. Lofthouse

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many suicides there have been in Armley prison, Leeds, during the last three months; on what dates they took place; what were the ages of those involved; for what crimes they were sentenced; and to what extent their imprisonment in Armley was due to a shortage of accommodation in other prisons.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

There have been two apparent suicides, yet to be confirmed as such at inquests, at Leeds prison during the last three months, on 28 May and the night of 29–30 June. Those involved were aged 17 and 18; both were remanded in custody, facing charges of aggravated burglary, and of theft and taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, respectively. Neither was held at Leeds because of shortage of accommodation elsewhere.
