To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has made to the French Government about the implications for the Channel tunnel of the costs of value added tax on the French portion of the project.

[holding answer 4 July 1988]: The effects of VAT on the construction of the Channel tunnel were considered jointly by the United Kingdom and French authorities at the planning stage. Special provisions were considered unnecessary.
