HL Deb 12 July 1988 vol 499 c818WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

On what date, if present rates of waste disposal continue, will waste disposal sites in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland be fully used up, distinguishing between the various categories of waste, and assuming that waste is no longer dumped at sea.

The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (The Earl of Caithness)

At present rates of mineral extraction and waste disposal by landfill, rather more void space is created each year than is required for landfill. Not all voids are suitable for use as landfill and they are unevenly spread throughout the country. In general however we do not expect there to be a shortage of void space for the disposal of UK waste.
