§ Mr. Donald Thompson[holding answer 7 July 1988]: The development of new pesticides is a matter for industry. However, the Agriculture Departments and the Agriculture and Food Research Council conduct and support a good deal of strategic research into alternatives to pesticides and into less toxic pesticides. For example, my Department is collaborating with the Scottish Salmon Growers Association to fund a three-year project at the University of Stirling on sea lice infections in cultured salmon. The association is also funding other related work at the university and elsewhere.
