HC Deb 12 July 1988 vol 137 c156W
35. Mr. Colin Shepherd

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services by how much the pay of ward sisters has increased since 1979.

Mr. Newton

The extent to which the pay of an individual sister has increased since 1979 depends on the duties and responsibilities of the post occupied, since these determine how the job is graded in the new clinical grading structure; and on whether or not the sister works in London.

The table sets out a range of outcomes for ward sisters on regrading.

104. Mr. Gorst

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how much the pay of staff nurses in inner London has increased since 1979.

Mr. Newton

The extent to which the pay of an individual nurse will have increased since 1979 as a result of the recent pay award will depend on the duties and responsibilities of the post occupied. However, the pay of a staff nurse on qualification working in inner London is now £9,677, including London weighting and London supplement. This is a real terms increase of £2,960, or 44.1 per cent. since 1979. The maximum pay of a staff nurse with post-basic nursing qualifications is now £12,538, including London weighting and London supplement. This is a real terms increase of £4,610 or 58.1 per cent. since 1979.
