Mr. David Young

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) for each police area, how many crimes of violence against the person were reported, and how many successful detections there were, for the last year for which figures are available; and in each case what was the percentage change since 1978;

(2) for each police area how many cases of burglary there were for the last year for which figures are available; what were the number of cases of successful detections; and what was the percentage change on the figures of burglary and the detections since 1978;

(3) how many cases of theft or handling of stolen goods in each police area there were for the last year for which figures are available; what was the successful detection rate; and what was the percentage change in such crimes and detection since 1978;

[holding answer 27 June 1988]: The numbers of notifiable offences recorded by the police in 1978 and 1987 are published, by offence group, in respectively table 32 of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, 1978" (Cmnd 7670) and table 7 of Home Office statistical bulletin, issue 6/88. Copies of these publications are available in the Library. The corresponding numbers of offences cleared up in 1978 and 1987 are given in the following two tables; the figures for 1987 will he published in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, 1987" later this year.
