HL Deb 06 July 1988 vol 499 cc383-4WA
Lord Mason of Barnsley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the steps taken by Welsh Water to restrict the activities of salmon and trout poachers on their rivers and still waters under their responsibilities for the maintenance, improvement and development of their fisheries.

Lord Trefgarne

The Welsh Water Authority has taken a number of measures to reduce illegal fishing, including improved enforcement and better liaison with local police forces. In addition the Salmon Act 1986 makes it an offence to handle illegally caught salmon and provides for the introduction of new bye-laws controlling illegal fishing for salmon in coastal waters and a dealer licensing scheme.
