HL Deb 05 July 1988 vol 499 c241WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the agreements about the stationing of United States nuclear weapons on British soil reached by Air Chief Marshal Tedder and General Spaatz in June and July 1946 are still in operation, and if so what is their status in domestic British and US law, and whether any limitation whatsoever results on British sovereignty in any part of the United Kingdom or elsewhere, and if so what.

The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)

The stationing of US forces in the United Kingdom is governed by a number of agreements between the British and US Governments. The agreements, most of which are classified, have all come into force since 1950. The operational use in an emergency of bases made available to US forces in the UK is covered by the Churchill Truman understanding of 1952.
