HL Deb 05 July 1988 vol 499 c242WA
Lord Chelwood

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What methods they used for the survey of trees blown down in the October hurricane or so badly damaged or leaning that they should be felled (broken down by county and metropolitan authority), and how accurate they consider the new figures.

The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (The Earl of Caithness)

Estimates of the damage caused by the October 1987 storm were made by the Forestry Commission and the Department of the Environment on the basis of air and ground inspection and air photography. Any estimates of this kind will be subject to margins of error, but there has not been any reason to doubt that these estimates are reliable.
