§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 27 June 1988]: The latest estimates of the total amount of income tax to be paid in a full year by the top 5 per cent. and the bottom 50 per cent. are £12.5 billion and £7.5 billion, respectively, for 1988–89.
The calculations are based on a projection of the 1985–86 survey of personal incomes and are therefore provisional.
