To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the current and proposed levels of activity in the United Kingdom oil-related fabrication sector.

Following the recovery from the oil price fall of 1986 there is now renewed confidence in the future of the offshore oil-related fabrication sector. I have approved a total of 14 projects this year so far with a total capital cost in excess of £1.65 billion (at 1988 prices). Orders for these projects and for those approved last year are already coming through.
