HC Deb 04 July 1988 vol 136 c433W
Mr. Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs are provided by the caravans and home parks industry.

Mr. Lee

Information relating specifically to the number of jobs provided by the caravans and home parks industry is not available. However, figures are available for all tourist or short-stay accommodation other than hotels, which includes caravans and home parks. The number of jobs in the industry is highly seasonal and to reflect this the following table gives the information at quarterly intervals during 1987.

Employees in employment in all tourist or short-stay accommodation other than hotels:

1987 Number
March 14,000
June 32,000
September 33,000
December 13,000

Notes:

1. The estimates shown in the table are subject to considerable potential estimation errors due to the relatively small number of employees in the industry.

2. The estimates include all employees in camping and caravan sites, holiday camps and other tourist or short-stay accommodation. (SIC 80 Activity Heading 6670).

In addition to the estimates given above, the census of employment showed that there were 4,000 employees employed in caravan manufacture in September 1984. Later estimates are not available.
