Mr. John Carlisle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if his Department will make funds available to support the Sport Council's new drugs testing regime.

Mr. Moynihan

The Department has decided to make an additional allocation of £180,000 to the Sports Council to complete the total financial package required to fund the new testing regime in its first year–1988–89. The council and the Government expect that private sector sponsorship will make a substantial contribution to funding the scheme in future years.
