§ Sir Geoffrey Johnson SmithTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what response the Egyptian Government have made to diplomatic representations with regard to Mr. Douglas Forsyth's property in Cairo; and whether, having regard to the low level of the compensation payment mentioned in his reply of 18 November 1987,Official Report, column 598, he is satisfied that the requirement for Mr. Forsyth, in common with other British subjects, to sell his property under duress of enforced Egyptian occupation is consistent with the letter and spirit of the 1959 United Kingdom Egyptian agreement.
§ Mr. MellorNo formal reply to our representations have yet been received but further hearings have taken place of both Mr. Forsyth's appeals with one being found in his favour. With regard to the compensation accepted by Mr. Forsyth's late fater, this was judicially determined by the Foreign Compensation Commission. There is no requirement under the 1959 agreement for Mr. Forsyth to sell his property, but this remains an option open to him.
