HC Deb 26 January 1988 vol 126 cc200-14W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the establishment figures of each local benefit office, distinguishing between short-term and permanent posts, and between contributory and noncontributory benefits sections, and showing the current case load per head at each office.

Mr. Portillo

I regret that information cannot be provided as requested. The table shows the current complement of each local social security office with the latest supplementary benefit caseload, which is based on a 100 per cent. count of liver cases. Although staff are designated as employed on either contributory benefits or supplementary benefits the totals will include staff employed on common services such as finance work. No figure comparable to supplementary benefit caseload exists for the range of contributory benefits.

The size of caseload is only one factor which determines complement. Other factors, such as activity on the caseload, play a more prominent role.

To provide a fuller answer would be disproportionately costly.
