To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is(a) the average, (b) the median and (c) the maximum casework backlog in B2 division at Lunar house; what are the causes of such backlogs; and what measures are being taken to reduce them.

[holding answer 19 January 1988]: On 18 January there were 269 cases which had been in B2 division for at least a month without initial action being taken. This largely reflects staff absences for a number of reasons, including leave over the Christmas period. The highest number on any one case-working officer's desk was 68, the average 7.5 and the median 0.
