To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what the percentages rise in average water rates for Wales has been between 1979 and the latest date available in(a) cash terms and (b) real terms.

The percentage rise in average water rates for the Welsh water authority between 1979–80 and 1987–88 in cash and real terms was 149.8 per cent. and 43.6 per cent. respectively.

These figures are based on the rates payable for the average domestic heriditament the rateable value of which was £120 from 1979 to 1982 and £124 thereafter.
