HC Deb 25 January 1988 vol 126 cc44-5W
Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what research has been done to design water meters which are unaffected by the abrasive qualities of water; and how often it will be necessary to remove and replace such water meters.

Mr. Moynihan

There is no evidence to suggest that water meters of the type used in Britain are affected by the abrasive quality of water, although, as part of the proposed metering trials, the in-service performance of meters will be carefully monitored. Current research suggests that meters have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.
