HC Deb 25 January 1988 vol 126 c94W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many re-registrations of nurses occurred in each of the last five years;

(2) what income he anticipates will arise from charges for the re-registration of nurses; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

Responsibility for maintaining the professional register rests with the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting. Since 1 January 1987 nurses, midwives and health visitors have been required by the United Kingdom Central Council to re-register every three years. Prior to that date registration was for life.

I understand from the United Kingdom Central Council that re-registrations during 1987 totalled 541,000. During the 1988–89 financial year it expects to raise £4,324,000 from periodic registration fees.
