HC Deb 25 January 1988 vol 126 c99W
Mrs. Peacock

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans his Department has to seek better reciprocal arrangements for medical treatment for United Kingdom nationals injured or taken ill in Spain; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

Under the terms of European Community regulations, United Kingdom nationals receive medical treatment in Spain from the Spanish state health care system on the same basis as Spanish nationals. Negotiations are currently taking place to ease access to the Spanish state system and to provide more information about it. United Kingdom nationals may also of course, if they wish, use Spanish private sector health care facilities paid for by themselves or by private insurance.
