HC Deb 25 January 1988 vol 126 cc81-2W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Government expect the rate of growth in output per head in manufacturing to go on increasing faster than the rate of growth in the rest of the economy over the next year; and if he will publish in theOfficial Report an estimate of the loss in gross domestic product as a result of the decline in the manufacturing base of the United Kingdom since 1979.

Mr. Major

[holding answer 22 January 1988]: Manufacturing output in the three months to November 1987 was 2.7 per cent. above the level in 1979. Total output rose 17 per cent. over that same period. The Autumn Statement contained no forecast of the growth of output per head.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will publish in theOfficial Report a table showing for each of the decades ending 1967, 1977 and 1987 the annual rate of growth in manufacturing, in industrial products less the extraction of oil and gas and in gross domestic product less the extraction of oil and gas.
