Mr. Shersby

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what advertising agents were appointed by the former Health Education Council or by the Central Office of Information on its behalf to handle campaigns involving the communication of information for which it was responsible during(a) 1985–86; and (b) the succeeding period until the council's abolition; what was the subject of each campaign; how much was spent on each campaign; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

I understand from the authorities concerned that the information requested is as follows:

Year Agency Campaign(s) Cost £
1985–86 Abbot Mead Vickers Smoking 889,500
1985–86 Redheads Advertising Whooping Cough 583,000
1986–87 Abbot Mead Vickers Smoking 737,200

In 1985–86 the Health Education Council also collaborated with the DHSS in a Departmentally funded pilot campaign to discourage teenage smoking, which employed the advertising agents FCO and cost £1 million.
