To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what discussions he has had with the chairman of British Coal about the future plans for the coal industry in 1988.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will detail the number of job losses in deep mining in Scotland since March 1985, up to the latest date available.

British Coal advises that 4,236 men were employed in Scottish deep-mining on 26 December 1987. The corresponding figure for 30 March 1985 was 11,263.
