To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what indication he has of the level of pollution in the Channel from the Cap de la Hague nuclear fuel reprocessing plant; what representations Her Majesty's Government have received expressing concern at the possibility of radioactive pollution crossing the Channel; what indication he has of French plans for expansion in nuclear reprocessing capacity at Cap de la Hague; what implications this has for safety in the United Kingdom; whether Her Majesty's Government propose to make any representations to the French Government on this matter; and if he will make a statement.

Expansion of the Cap de la Hague facility is a matter for the French authorities. However, as a signatory to the Euratom treaty France has an obligation under article 37 to provide the Commission with such general data relating to any plan for the disposal of radioactive waste in whatever from as will make it possible to determine whether the implementation of such a plan
