HC Deb 25 January 1988 vol 126 c10W
Mr. Tony Banks

to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if any funds are made available by the British Government directly or indirectly for conservation of the black rhino.

Mr. Eggar

The black rhino is a protected species under the convention in international trade in endangered species of fauna and flora. The United Kingdom plays a full arid active part in encouraging the implementation of this convention. Our 1987 contribution to the CITES secretariat was US$37,863 (£26,478).

The Overseas Development Administration also provide a contribution in the form of an adviser working with the Zimbabwe Department of National Parks on schemes to encourage wildlife conservation. One of the principal beneficiaries of such schemes should be the black rhino. The ODA is also in contact with "Rhino Rescue" about the possibility of co-funding a project in Kenya, the principal aim of which is the preservation there of the black rhino population.
