Mr. Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many places are available under the assisted places scheme in each local authority area for 1988–89; and how many applications have been received in each area.

The present number of assisted places available by reference to local authority area for take-up in September 1988 is as listed. We are currently considering how the assisted places scheme will be expanded in line with our manifesto commitment. Information regarding applications for assisted places is not collected centrally.
