To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what services have been contracted out within the Mersey regional health authority to date; and what savings have been made or are expected from such contracting out.

As at 30 September 1987, 94 per cent. of domestic cleaning services, 89 per cent. of catering services and 93 per cent. of laundry services in the Mersey region had been put out to competitive tender. Estimated annual savings generated from contracts awarded in the region currently total £5.9 million.
