HC Deb 21 January 1988 vol 125 c860W
Mr. Jim Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will give the latest estimates of average adult earnings in Northern Ireland; and if he will also show the proportion of workers in(a) retailing and (b) hairdressing who earn less than £2 per hour.

Mr. Viggers

The latest results from the new earnings survey for Northern Ireland show that in April 1987 average weekly earnings for all full-time employees on adult rates were £176.4. Results also show that approximately 25 per cent, of full-time employees in the survey working in retail distribution sectors earned less than £2 per hour. Estimates of average hourly earnings for persons working in hairdressing occupations are not available.
