To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on progress with DNA testing.

DNA profiling has been used in the analysis of evidential material in about 150 forensic science cases so far, and in analysing samples from mass screenings. The technique is to be used in analysing samples from a mass screening which is to be undertaken in Thames Valley in connection with investigations into an unsolved murder.

Due weight is already given to the results of DNA tests submitted by applicants in support of entry clearance applications. The results of the pilot trial to evaluate the role of DNA testing in immigration procedures should be available shortly.
