HC Deb 20 January 1988 vol 125 cc762-3W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether any agreements exist for military nuclear waste to be(a) taken into the United Kingdom from other countries and (b) taken to other countries from the United Kingdom; and whether any such waste has been moved under either of these two categories.

Mr. Sainsbury

There are no formal agreements involving acceptance overseas of nuclear wastes from British defence operations in the United Kingdom, and none has been sent.

Nor are there formal agreements for acceptance into the United Kingdom of nuclear wastes from British defence operations overseas, but small quantities have been returned to the United Kingdom on an ad hoc basis.

Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many plutonium and radioactive waste related projects at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston, have been agreed by Ministers in each year since 1979; what have been the costs of each project(a) at the time agreed and (b) currently; and if he will make a statement about the reasons for changes.

Mr. Sainsbury

Information on past and current estimates of the capital works programme at AWE Aldermaston, together with the progression of costs were contained in the report by the Comptroller and Auditor General on the "Control and Management of the Trident Programme" (HC 27). I have nothing to add to this information.
