HL Deb 20 January 1988 vol 492 cc322-3WA
The Marquess of Salisbury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much aid they have given over the past three years to the governments of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Angola in cash, arms, services, military training and military advisers.

Lord Glenarthur

Over the past three complete financial years our bilateral aid, which includes such items as programme aid, project aid, technical cooperation, CDC loans, debt relief and food aid, has amounted to about £0.75m for Angola, £28m for Mozambique and £50m for Zimbabwe (though not all these components are included in the aid for each individual country). Expenditure on military training and military advisers for the same period has amounted to about £1m for Mozambique (although there is no separate military training mission in Mozambique), and £9m for Zimbabwe. There has been no such expenditure on Angola. We have also given a small amount of non-lethal defence equipment to Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
