§ Mr. MaplesTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement about the funding of Goldsmiths' college in the light of the resolution passed by the senate of London university to admit the college as a school of the university from 1 August.
§ Mr. Kenneth BakerGoldsmiths' college is currently funded direct by the Department. In the light of its new status from 1 August, I have today written to the vice-chancellor of London University, the chairman of the University Grants Committee and the warden of Goldsmiths' college agreeing that, from that date, funding for Goldsmiths' should be added to the funding for London university which is paid from the universities vote on the advice of the UGC. Subject to parliamentary approval, the appropriate transfer will be made to the universities vote. This includes an addition of £800,000 for 1988–89 to meet the necessary transitional costs of Goldsmiths' new status.
